History |

Lewistown Elementary School is the first new elementary school
constructed in the Mifflin County School District in many years.
Students attended Derry and Seventh Ward Elementary Schools prior
to their move LES on February 2, 2004. Constructed for
approximately 12.4 million dollars, LES has a rated capacity of
650 students. There are 22 regular classrooms and 4 kindergarten
classrooms. The building is located on six acres directly behind
Lewistown High School and within walking distance of Lewistown
Middle School, creating a campus atmosphere. Classrooms are
located in a 3-story wing. Each floor houses two grade levels,
including age appropriate learning support classrooms. The single
story wing houses all of the common area activities, including an
art room, music room, gymnasium, cafeteria, library, kitchen,
nurse's suite, guidance and administrative offices.
Security for students and staff was among the considerations
when designing the building. Visitors must identify themselves at
the front entrance before gaining access to the school. Separate
entrances for busses and visitors are part of the design as an
additional safety feature. The sidewalk was extended from Manor
drive for those students who walk to school and teachers have the
ability to lock the classroom from both inside and out.
Restroom areas have a common sink area within clear view from
the hallway for added supervision and student access.
Additionally, each restroom has one handicapped accessible area,
as well as separate restrooms for faculty on each level of the
building. Different colored floor tiles identify the grade level
areas. An elevator is located in the classroom wing for students
and staff who require adaptive services. The library is a central
focus of the school and offers a diverse environment for children,
including unique areas for special activities. A mini-computer lab
is available for small group or individual access. The computer
lab can be accessed from the library for large group research
projects.
All kindergarten and some special education rooms have bathroom
facilities. All classrooms have individual student spaces for
coats and belongings, a private phone, networked computers,
television, combination DVD/VCR player, sink with water fountain,
tack strips, storage space and a large walk-in closet. Special
Education rooms are equipped with appropriate furniture and
materials to support their programs. |
