Manipulative Skills

Manipulative skills are complex skills that involve throwing, catching, kicking and/ or striking. These skills are basic to a number of specialized sports. It's never to soon to help your son or daughter with these skills.

Overhand Throwing Cues
  • Opposite shoulder faces target
  • Opposite foot steps toward target
  • Ball is held near the ear
  • Lead with the elbow
  • STEP/TURN/THROW
Underhand Tossing Cues
  • Face target
  • Step with opposite foot towards target
  • Swing arm back close to body
  • SWING/STEP/TOSS

 

Catching Cues
  • Get your body lined up with the ball
  • Watch the ball into your hands
  • Thumbs together for a high catch
  • Pinkies together for a low catch
  • Soft hands-pull hands in to body as you make the catch
 

Dribble Cues

  • Contact the ball with finger pads

  • Push the ball to the floor

  • As the ball comes up give with it

  • Dribble waist high for control

Shooting Cues

  • Feet shoulder width apart with shooting foot forward

  • Knees Bent

  • Shoulders square to the basket

  • Ball rests on finger pads

  • Elbow in an "L" AND under the ball

  • Wrist cocked

  • Non shooting hand on the side of the ball

  • LIFT - SHOOT - FOLLOW THROUGH - Rotation
