ADVANCED PLACEMENT & HONORS COURSES

Mifflin County School District offers several Honors Level and Advanced Placement Courses. These courses are designed for students who plan to attend a 4 year college or university and who wish to work at a more intense pace. Honors courses typically cover the same curriculum as their non-honors counterparts but involve higher level thinking skills and go into more depth in the subject area. AP courses follow the college-level curriculum suggested by the College Board in order to give the student the opportunity of successfully completing the AP exam (which is required of any student who takes the course and will be paid for by the school district). In addition, if a student scores well on the exam, they may earn college credit from the institution they attend. Students planning to apply to a four-year college or university are strongly encouraged to take AP courses to improve their chances of admission. During the 2008-2009 school year, the following courses will be offered:

HONORS LEVEL ADVANCED PLACEMENT
  • English 10
  • English 11
  • English 12
  • Chemistry I
  • Chemistry II
  • Biology II
  • Physics II Geometry
  • Precalculus
  • Calculus
  • English Literature and Composition
  • United States Government
  • Economics (micro and macro)
  • Computer Science A
  • Chemistry
  • Biology
  • Physics C: Mechanics
  • Calculus AB

The school counselors can assist students and parents in making the decision of whether to take an AP course or not. Teachers are asked to recommend students who they feel are prepared for the challenge of Honors Level and AP courses. Typically, the students who are most successful exhibit the following characteristics:

Creativity, flexibility, innovation, motivation, self-discipline, good work habits, long attention span, and open mindedness.

**Students are required to pay for half of the cost of the AP exam. (There will be a reduction for students who qualify for free or reduced lunch).

WEIGHTING SYSTEM

The National Association of Secondary School Principals recommends that class rank be computed on a system of academic weighting. These Weighted values are assigned to courses designated as "Honors courses" and "AP courses", and are used only for the determination of class rank, eligibility for National Honor Society, Regular Honor Roll and Distinguished Honor Roll.

The report cards of students taking Honors and AP courses will reflect the percentage earned in a class each marking period up to and including a 100% (Bonus points of over 100% will not be reflected on a report card.) The weight assigned to the course will not be evident until the marking period GPA is computed. For any Honors course in which the student has a 77% or higher, the percentage will be multiplied by 1.02 before it is averaged for class rank and honor roll purposes. If a student is taking AP courses and earned at least a 77% the multiplier will be l.04. It should be noted that a minimum percentage average of 68% is required to successfully pass each course.

570.56

FORMULA: Total Weighted Averages = Numerical Grade Average
       Total Credit Value

570.56 = 87.77
   6.5

The numerical grade average is used to rank students according to academic achievement. Class rank positions will be determined by averages carried out to the third decimal place. Students in a given grade are included in determining rank-in-class. The exact rank is computed at the end of the junior year, at the end of the first semester of the senior year, at the end of the third marking period of the senior year and at the end of the senior year. The third marking period ranking is used for the honoring of students at Commencement. When the ranking procedure ties – even after the results are carried out to three (3) decimal places – students who are tied will be given the same rank number.
