ADVANCED PLACEMENT & HONORS COURSES
Mifflin County School District
offers several Honors Level and
Advanced Placement Courses. These
courses are designed for students who
plan to attend a 4 year college or
university and who wish to work at a
more intense pace. Honors courses
typically cover the same curriculum
as their non-honors counterparts but
involve higher level thinking skills
and go into more depth in the subject
area. AP courses follow the
college-level curriculum suggested by
the College Board in order to give
the student the opportunity of
successfully completing the AP exam
(which is required of any student who
takes the course and will be paid for
by the school district). In addition,
if a student scores well on the exam,
they may earn college credit from the
institution they attend. Students
planning to apply to a four-year
college or university are strongly
encouraged to take AP courses to
improve their chances of admission.
During the 2008-2009 school year, the

The school counselors can assist
students and parents in making the
decision of whether to take an AP
course or not. Teachers are asked to
recommend students who they feel are
prepared for the challenge of Honors
Level and AP courses. Typically, the
students who are most successful
exhibit the following
characteristics:
Creativity, flexibility,
innovation, motivation,
self-discipline, good work habits,
long attention span, and open
mindedness.
**Students are required to pay
for half of the cost of the AP exam.
(There will be a reduction for
students who qualify for free or
reduced lunch). |
