LAHS Key Club       

Key Club Convention - February 29-March 2, 2008

     Lewistown Key Club took top honors at the 62nd Annual Pennsylvania District Key Club Convention held at Hershey on February 29-March 2, 2008, for its first ever international service project.  At this convention clubs competed with other clubs of the same size by entering a project and the steps that went into the implementation of the project.

     This year's award was given for their help to students in a Russian school in Afghanistan.  The need for school supplies and hygiene articles like toothbrushes and toothpaste was made known to them through correspondence with LT. Col. Stephany Hartshirn of the 205th RSAC Navy Garrison, stationed in Khandahar, Afghanistan.

     The club sold ornaments created by the Art Club for a Christmas tree in the main lobby of the school that was decorated with these ornaments and with donated supplies from the students and staff at LAHS.  The proceeds from the sale of the ornaments were used to purchase and send eleven boxes of supplies to Hartshirn.

     This project was the first international project of the many community service projects that the club has participated in over the years.  The project took 110 hours and include 50% participation of members.  The success of it was so rewarding that the club is looking for other ideas of this kind.

  As a result of this success, the LAHS Key Club members were recognized by Pennsylvania State Senator Jake Corman for their outstanding community service with this project.  The club was presented with a document from the Pennsylvania State Senate to commemorate the service performed.
