LAHS Participant to Governor's School

Cassie Knouse, a current senior at LAHS, attended Governor’s School for teaching over the summer.  Governor’s School is for high school students who are academically or artistically skilled and looking to further their knowledge in fields that they may be interested in pursuing as a career.  The program offers many fields which include agriculture, the arts, global entrepreneurship, health care, the sciences, and teaching.  The classes, which are offered at selected college campuses around the state, start in the summer and usually last about five-weeks.

Cassie left for Governor’s School in the summer on June 26th  and returned on July 31st. When asked what one needs to do to be accepted into the program Cassie said, “To be accepted you have to fill out an application, then you need two teacher recommendations and a guidance counselor recommendation too. You also have to write several essays. One of my essays was about my Leadership project and another I introduced myself and why I wanted to be a teacher.  Also, I had to create a résumé with all the activities I am in.”

“I have always wanted to be an elementary teacher. I thought this experience would help me decide if I really wanted to teach,” was Cassie response to why she decided to go to Governor’s School.

At Governor’s School Cassie was required to prepare lessons and actually teach them to classes of 4th and 5th graders. She also had to create a leadership project stating a problem dealing with our community. Her leadership project is currently being implemented as a mentoring program. While there, the students in the teaching program where placed in groups of 16 and were told to design a future school and a curriculum for the school.

“Going to Governor’s School benefits you in many ways. It looks great on your college application. It also qualifies you for special scholarships just for students who went to Governor’s School. Definitely apply! If you get accepted, go for it. You meet so many awesome people and you get to actually work in the field you go for,” concluded Cassie.
