LAHS National Merit Scholar

For the first time in recent history a senior at LAHS, has qualified for the National Merit Scholarship Program.  Senior, Ben Matthews has competed with 1.4 million students to become a finalist for the National Merit Scholarships. In the program, Ben could be eligible to receive more than 8,000 scholarships, totaling more than $33 million.  

To begin this process, Ben took his PSAT’s last year and had one of the highest scores in Pennsylvania. In addition to having high test scores to be considered, students must have an outstanding academic record, be approved and recommended by their school principal and earn an SAT score that further proves their academic excellence. After it has been decided that a student is eligible for the program, the student and a school official must submit a very detailed application which includes an essay as well as information about the student’s participation and leadership in school and community activities.

Ben competed with approximately 15,000 semifinalists to advance to this level and it is from this group that the scholarship honorees will be decided. There are three types of scholarships being awarded this year, each student eligible for at least $2,500. In addition, businesses and corporations sponsor over 1,000 scholarships and 200 colleges and universities give 4,600 other awards. Already, Ben has been awarded the $2,500 scholarship. Other winners will be announced starting in April and ending in July. Congratulations to Ben on his achievement.
