The School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University
of Pennsylvania is pleased to announce the PennGEMS program
(Girls in Engineering, Math, and Science).
PennGEMS is a week-long day
camp targeted at girls finishing 6th, 7th, and 8th grade who
are interested in Math, Science and Engineering. Students
will spend August 4-8 working with faculty and students in
Bioengineering, Materials Science, Graphics and Computing.

PAECT
CAPITOL STUDENT TECHNOLOGY SHOWCASE
"Clic for pics"
On
May 18, 2008, eight students from Indian Valley Middle School
attended the PAECT Student Technology Showcase at the Capitol
Building in Harrisburg, Pa. This showcase is an annual
gathering of school students throughout Pennsylvania who bring their
technology projects and ideas to share with our legislators.
Our students showcased their Kids' Cut-Lewistown project by showing
the film as well as filming and interviewing showcase participants.
Chaperoning the trip was Mrs. Snook and Mr. White, IVMS Computer
Teachers.

The Pennsylvania Technology Student Association (PA TSA) held its
annual state conference at Seven Springs Resort on April 9 - 12,
2008. All middle and high schools in the Mifflin County School
District sent students to the conference to compete in over 70
middle and high school events. The conference was attended
by approximately 1,400 students from all over the state.
All Mifflin County schools did very well, bringing home many top 10
finishes in various events. There was only one state champion, a 7th
grade student from Indian Valley Middle School. Emily Shapard, from IVMS, won state championships in
two middle school events. Emily was a 1st place winner in middle
school events called PA Safety Illustration - Computer Graphics and
Career Challenge. Emily is eligible and looking forward to
competing at the National TSA Conference. The National TSA
Conference is scheduled to take place this summer in Orlando,
Florida from June 28 - July 2, 2008. Congratulations and good luck
Emily.

1st place for IVMS!!!!
This IVMS Future Problem Solving team
will represent the state of Pennsylvania at the Future Problem
Solving International Competition, which will be held in East
Lansing Michigan, Michigan State University. More information

SECOND STEP AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM
The SECOND STEP AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM
is being offered to at the Indian Valley Middle School by the
Tuscarora Intermediate Unit. The SECOND STEP AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM
is held on Wednesdays after school in Room 106. The activity begins
immediately after school and ends at 5:00pm. Transportation home
is
provided by J&D Transportation at 5:00pm. This activity
includes a snack, a time for students to work on homework assignments,
and a Second Step Lesson. Second Step is a
researched based violence prevention curriculum designed to increase
social skills and reduce violence among young people. This
program teaches problem solving and other skills needed in getting along
with others as well as resisting peer pressure. This program is
beneficial to all young people and is being offered to a variety of
students.

Reading Club
(a new and exciting after-school program) is
being offered this fall at IVMS. Your child could be given the
chance to develop his/her reading skills by utilizing the Soliloquy
computer program.
Games, activities, snacks, and the chance to win free prizes will be
