Financial Aid
Information
Questions to Ask Admissions Counselors:
- What was the tuition increase this year and have the
increases been consistent over the past couple of years?
- Do you offer a payment plan?
- Does the school require an institutional financial aid
form to be completed?
- Does the college have a separate application for
scholarships awarded by that particular school? If they do, are the
scholarships renewable?
FAFSA (Federal Application for Free Student Aid)
- FAFSA worksheets are currently available. Complete the
worksheet first so you have all of your numbers ready when you file the FAFSA
after January 1st.
- Typically, you will receive a response 2 weeks sooner if
you file online.
- When filing your FAFSA, make sure to enter your first
choice school first. Do not enter the most expensive school first and think
you will get more aid.
- Aid is awarded on a first come, first serve basis. Pay
very close attention to deadlines. If you file late, you may not receive any
aid.
- The state deadline is May 1st, but some schools have
much earlier deadlines.
Financial Aid
- There are 4 ways of financing your education; loans,
grants, scholarships, and work study.
- According to our speaker, students who work 8-11 hours
per week during their freshman year of college get better grades than those
who don’t. It instills time management skills.
- Work study is available through many schools. This
means a college will offer a student a specified amount of money to be earned
through a job on campus over the course of a semester.
- Pell Grants are awarded to students based primarily on
family size and number of members of household in college. Financial need is
also considered. You can get up to $4400.00. If you file a FAFSA, you will
be considered.
- By filing the FAFSA, you will be considered for student
loans based on expected family contribution (EFC). Loan amounts will be
calculated by subtracting the EFC from the cost of the school the student
plans to attend. This amount can be modified when the student has determined
if other sources will be available such as scholarships or grants given by the
college the student will attend.
