Frequently Asked Questions:

What is job shadowing?

Job Shadowing involves observing a worker on the job and learning about careers first hand.

Who can job shadow?

Students in any grade may job shadow, however, older students are usually given priority placement.

Eleventh and twelfth grade students often shadow early in the school year because of career projects or because they are choosing college majors based on their anticipated career path.

Some employers restrict shadowing in their businesses to older students only.

How often can a student job shadow?

The maximum number of shadowing appointment allowed is two appointments per school year.

How do I apply to job shadow?

Students in all grades apply by filling out a shadowing application.  The application must be signed by a parent or guardian and returned to Mrs. Swigart, in person or in her mailbox at the school office.

To pick up an application or discuss your questions, locate Mrs. Swigart in Room 158B in the Business/Computer hall of IVHS, contact her by email, or download the application and submit it as described above.

Are there any restrictions for job shadowing participation?

All students who shadow must be in good standing as a student at IVHS.  They must provide their own transportation to and from the shadowing site.

Students must read and complete a job shadowing packet, which includes the approval of their teachers as well as their parent or guardian.  They should also be willing to meet the dress requirements required by the employer.  After shadowing, each student sends a thank you note to the employer and completes a brief evaluation of the experience.

A student who applies to job shadow is not guaranteed a job shadowing placement.  Occasionally, the student’s career request can’t be located for a shadowing appointment.

How long is a typical job shadowing appointment?

The employer sets the starting and ending time for shadowing.  Some prefer to have a student with them for a half-day only.  Others encourage students to observe an entire school day or more.  Those who shadow for a half-day spend the other part of that day in school.

Can I make my own shadowing appointment?

All shadowing appointments occurring during the regular school hours must be arranged and confirmed by Mrs. Swigart following the process described above.

What’s the final date for submitting my application?

Be sure your application is in to Mrs. Swigart by April 13.
