Mrs. Soccio’s
Kindergarten Class
Goes Nuts for Peanuts!
Mrs.
Soccio’s Kindergarten class has been learning all about peanuts. Students went
on an adventure to explore where peanuts originated from and how they came to
the United States. They also used their five senses to explore the peanut
itself.
Did you
know that a peanut is NOT a nut? It is a legume! Students labeled and colored
a peanut plant diagram. Students also discussed Mr. George Washington Carver,
who is responsible for inventing over 300 products made with peanuts!
Finally,
students participated in making their own homemade peanut butter, which they
later enjoyed for their afternoon snack! Once students were fed, they used the
peanut butter, bird seed, and pine cones to help feed the birds who would not be
migrating south for the winter.
Over the
course of this unit, students enjoyed many peanut and peanut butter snacks,
especially when celebrating National Peanut Butter Lover’s Day in November and
when Mr. Good from Pappy’s Nuts came to visit. They wrote about their favorite
snacks in a Kidwriting lesson, and learned how to say “PEANUT” in sign
language. They sang several songs about peanuts, and helped crack The Case
of the Mysterious Peanut.
To end the unit on peanuts, students
enjoyed a visit from Mr. Peanut who scrambled peanuts for them to find. So, if
you want to know something about peanuts, just ask one of our experts in Mrs.
Soccio’s Kindergarten class.
