"PARTS IS PARTS ASSEMBLY"
Thursday, February 1, 2007

Meet A.D.A.M. (Anatomically Detailed Automated
Mannequin), our almost human-looking, human-acting, and anatomically human-like
(yet genderless) 6 foot robot. In a fun, yet factual manner, our somewhat goofy
scientist/doctor explains the human body in a non-threatening manner. She was
assisted by A.D.A.M. who carries on conversations with the good doctor as parts
of his anatomy were opened, examined, removed, and then replaced. Four
functions of the human body were explored: the digestive system, the nervous
system, the skeletal system, and the respiratory system.
As each system was being explained, A.D.A.M. had
things happen to him. His eyes lit up when a part of his arm was opened. Smoke
came out of his ears when he got mad at the doctor. He cried real tears when a
student volunteer from the audience forgot to hug him. When his foam rubber
brain was exposed, lights flashed on and off in sync with other "nerves" in his
body. Each system hac a series of large visual aids that accompanied A.D.A.M.
The doctor requested the help of a student assistants from the audience.
Everyone had fun and at the same time our
students and staff learned what makes us tick. This entire 45 minute program
was presented in such a way that it is entertained and educated us at the
same time.

After the assembly, a special workshop for 5th
graders was held in the school's library, where the students got some "Hands-On"
experiences learning about different systems and functions of the body.
