Solar Ovens 2002
Mr. Yearick's and Mrs. Ressler's classes have recently been learning about the sun and solar energy.  They learned that the sun produces amounts of heat and light to our Earth.  After doing several hands-on activities to prove that the sun does provide heat and to find the best way to attract it, their assignment was to invent or make their own solar oven.  They waited for a sunny day and the classes tried them out.  They made S'mores, and nachos.  They also included chocolate chip cookies in order to try to melt the chocolate chips.  Following are some of their observations.

My solar cooker worked with a flap with tin foil on it and foil inside of it. The inside had two triangles on each side and two trapezoids on a side, and on the outside was black foam to work as an insulation. Justin I think my solar oven worked, it melted my chocolate and melted my brownie too. Hope

My solar oven was kind of good but bugs got in it. Addison My solar cooker was very good. Dylan The heat made the chocolate melt and the brownie hot. Even though we didn’t have light from the sun the entire time, it still worked. Chelsea

My solar power oven worked by putting it on a hill when it was sunny out. Then I put a smore and a brownie then I let them go and they got warm, ready to eat. Mara My solar cooker worked good. The stuff in it cooked good. Nick My solar oven worked fine. A couple bugs got in it but I still ate it. The chocolate got smeared all over my face! Teagan

It melted my chocolate and my marshmallow a little bit. My graham crackers were just warm. Dylan I think my solar oven worked wonderful, and it worked really, really great. You can tell it worked great because it almost burnt my brownie. Alyssa The brownies were warm. Jacob

My solar cooker didn’t work very good. It only melted my chocolate a little bit. Nathen My solar cooker worked really well. It melted the chocolate but not the marshmallow. Brandon My oven worked good! The chocolate really melted. The smores tasted great! Sabrina

My solar oven worked good. It melted my chocolate and warmed my brownie. Megan My solar oven worked great. My chocolate really melted. Angel My solar cooker worked by the sun and I put a magnifying glass and it made my chocolate melt. Leah

It did not work good at all. Levi It worked by the sun’s energy and the sun melted the smore. Brandon My solar oven worked great. Alan
