Mr. Hill explains about the circulatory system.

First Aid in the Wilderness

Mr. James Hill, a wilderness EMT talked to Mr. Yearick's and Mrs. Ressler's classes because they have been studying first aid in Health class. He explained the fire companies and the EMT's work together many times.

He showed the children some of his equipment. His equipment included a hard hat with a lamp, stretcher, casting materials, elastic bandages, a sam splint, triangular bandages, sterile dressings, and rubber gloves.

Applying direct pressure.

Elevation and direct pressure. Mr. Hill discussed the substance which keeps our muscles and bones happy which is blood. If someone is cut the supply of blood is gone and your muscles or bones are not happy. Mr. Hill showed us how to handle certain cuts and he taught the students the way to stop bleeding. They are to remember the letters D. E. P. T. These letters stand for direct pressure, elevation, pressure point, and tourniquet. He asked for a volunteer and demonstrated these four steps on the student.
Mr. Hill's next topic was broken bones. He explained why the skeletal system is so important to our body. He explained the different kinds of bones and how a broken long bone is dangerous to our muscles and bones. He asked for another volunteer and demonstrated how to set a broken femur. He also went on to show different splinting techniques.

The femur is located here.

The children were very interested in this presentation. Below are some of the comments from Mr. Yearick's students.

  • Mr. Hills presentation was neat! I liked it a lot! I liked to see the part when you got to learn what you would do to a bad cut. I learned quite a bit about a bad cut. That part was also neat! Their was also another part I liked was when he told us how to heal a broken leg. I thought that was neat too! There was some gross things he said but I liked that part. I learned that the broken bone sometimes kind of well the bone goes up sometimes. Well any way I liked it a lot! B

  • I thought it was really fun! We learned about broken bones and how to stop the bleeding if someone is really bleeding. It was fun being the person who got to go up and have a serious bleeding injury on my leg and my arm. That's how I feel about the program. S

  • From Mr. Hill I learned what to do if someone broke a long bone. I also learned about Veins, Arteries, and capillaries. I think it was fun learning about arteries. I learned that you have tubes in your body. I think that was a really cool show. J

  • Mr. Hill taught us very important things. First he drew a heart and taught us about veins, arteries, and capillaries. After that he taught us about the bones then he left. I learned a lot and will remember what he said. J
