3rd Grade Group Project

HPAE Home Thank You for My Freedom

[HPAE Home] -

Friday, May 11, 2001 was a special day for third grade students at HPAE. The entire third grade class assembled in the music room to meet Mr. and Mrs. Berube, representatives from the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). The students sang several patriotic songs and watched as Mr. and Mrs. Berube presented pins to four students with outstanding essays on the topic of "I'm Thankful for My Freedom". The students read their essay to the students and are as follows:

Thank Veterans for My Freedom
By R. B.

I’m thankful for the veterans who fought wars for our freedom. In the Civil War, the veterans fought for the freedom of blacks so they can live freely. I’m thankful for the veterans because Americans have the right to watch whatever we want to and we can talk, think, and do whatever we want. Some countries have a dictator and whatever he says, they do. We need a military, Navy and Army, just in case a different country tries to take over America.

I’m thankful for my freedom and protection. We have freedom because of our veterans, if you ever thought of that. Do you know that in some countries they can’t even say certain things? Some people can’t go to the churches they want to either. Aren’t you glad our veterans freed us from this stuff? Just think, if our veterans wouldn’t have freed us from this. My papwas a veteran in the Navy. He was out on a ship watching for other ships and people that might attack our country. I think I might be in the Navy some day.

I’m Thankful for my Freedom

Do you know that veterans are people who fought in the war? My pap was in the Vietnam War and he came back from the war alive. I probably was not born yet. But if the veterans did not fight in the war, evil people could have taken over the world. But if they did take over the world, we wouldn’t have freedom for almost anything. But the veterans stopped them from doing that. I might be a veteran when I grow up.

I’m Thankful for my Freedom
By T. G.

Freedom is the part of this country I like the most. The freedom to talk, to be free and the freedom to do what you like to do are important to me. Veterans are the people who made this all possible. They fought all the wars to do this. On Veteran’s Day, we should turn off the television and start celebrating Veteran’s Day, the day those people helped us. We needed these people to help defend our country from other countries because I don’t think we want to be taken over. It’s so important to have these people. Thank you, Veterans, for keeping our country free.
