[HPAE Home] - [2nd
Grade Projects] - [ Math Journals] - [ Guest Speaker ]
Every Friday in math class we write in our journals. Some of the topics we have written about are the strategies we use in class to solve problems and we have even created our own story problems for our classmates to solve. We have also written about what we believe math is all about and how we use it everyday. This activity has become a favorite and we look forward to it each week Guest Speaker - Mr. Walker An Apple A Day Keeps The Doctor Away How many times have you heard this saying? Mr. Gordon Walker, former agricultural agent in Mifflin County, told our class apples are one of the best sources of fiber and Vitamin C. He said be sure to eat the skin of the apple since that is where most of the nutrition is found. Americans eat 18 pounds of apples a year which is about 1 apple a week. Mr. Walker says we should eat 1 apple a day. We also learned that George Washington planted an apple orchard at his Mt. Vernon home. Washingtons favorite apple was the Newton Pippen. Thomas Jeffersons favorite apple was the Esopus Spitzenbur. If you visit Monticello, Jeffersons home, you will see many of his favorite apple trees still growing there. Before leaving Mr. Walker gave each of us an Empire apple to enjoy. The next time we go to the grocery store with our families we will be looking for some of the different kinds of apples we learned about and tasted earlier in the month.
* This was a culminating activity to our social studies unit on A Working World.
