Everyone loves to hear a
good story, but when the story is
told by a "Mime" you need to
listen more carefully. What makes
it even MORE fun is when the
story is written by someone you
know.
The 'Young Authors Day'
assembly program was provided by
the HPAE Home and School
Association in support of the
creative writing curriculum. The
day began with an all school
student assembly, designed to
introduce the students to the
"Art of Silence". Many students
had never seen a mime and thought
it was a game of charades, so
they tried to guess the story out
loud.
As the assembly
continued, Robert showed the
students how a mime can tell a
story 'silently' and that a
creative story for the stage
needs four characteristics.
1)Place,
2) Person/s, 3) Problem, 4)
Solution (usually funny). The
other advice Robert gave the
students was KISS (Keep It Super
Simple).
Following the morning
assembly, the students returned
to their rooms to write their
creative stories. Robert stopped
by to visit many classrooms
without his makeup and stage
attire to see how the writing
process was going. During lunch,
the stories were read and several
were selected to be performed in
the afternoon assemblies. How
exciting to have your creative
story performed in front of
the school.
