PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

With just 25 days of school left, we are diligently working to make the end of the year an enjoyable experience for students. With field trips, musical programs, field day, beach day and assemblies, the final weeks of school will pass quickly.  Currently teachers are covering needed curriculum making sure students will be prepared for the following grade level.  Our fifth graders will be visiting IVMS for an orientation to their next school on May 13.  This has been a great group of students and we will miss them!   These fifth graders have completed their visits to Shaver's Creek.  Because of its intensity and magnitude, many students report it as their most memorable elementary school experience.  Currently we are making plans to clean and get the school ready for next year.

HOME AND SCHOOL

The next Home and School meeting will be held Thursday, May 8, at 7:00 p.m., in the library.  All interested parents are welcome to attend.

CONCERTS/MUSICAL

Mr. Baylor has scheduled two opportunities to hear our students display the skills they have learned through their instrumental music lessons.  First, our band students will perform with band students from other elementary buildings in the Indian Valley attendance area.  This performance will be held at Indian Valley Middle School on Monday, May 12, beginning at 6:30 p.m.  Our Highland Park Band will offer a concert in our gym on Tuesday May 27, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

BEACH DAY

Beach Day, on May 30, is an opportunity for our students to celebrate receiving their yearbooks.  We have an extended lunch recess time when the students may have their yearbooks autographed by teachers, staff and friends.  The Home and School provides the resources to purchase a yearbook for each of our students and they design the yearbook too.  This is always a nice book of memories for our children.

FIRST GRADE READERS

Starting with the event Read Across America in March, our first graders read a whopping 658 books.  These students produced a super long bookworm that has been extended in length for each book read to family members.  It now fills up the entire 1st grade hallway.

TEACHERS FOR NEXT YEAR

From past experiences many of you know that unless there are extreme circumstances our district does not honor requests for
specific classroom teachers.  The teachers, counselors, and administrators work hard creating heterogeneous balanced classes to
address many academic, social, and behavioral issues.  Much work goes into creating a balanced classroom conductive to learning.

SUMMER READING

An article in the Parent Institute reminds parents of the importance of having children keep up with reading over the summer months.  Reading is a skill and it is the practice that produces success.  Not reading during the summer makes for a lengthy review process to
return to the same level of competence they had when they went home for summer. The Institute notes that setting a good example is
always the best way to teach children to do anything.  If you want to encourage your child to read, make sure he has plenty of
opportunity to see you reading books, magazines and newspapers every day.  Make it a point to talk with your children about what
you are reading.  Share a funny story you’ve just read. When you make it clear that reading is part of your everyday life, you’ll find
that reading soon becomes part of their lives too. As many of us are finding out, reading is a key to success in school for students of
all ages.  Children who are good readers find it easier to do well in other subjects, because so much of learning depends on the ability to read.  Many parents of younger children have found that a routine of spending 15 minutes reading to their child each night has truly
enhanced their child’s success in school.
