IN LOVING MEMORY OF

KAY MYERS
Our Kay Myers Memorial Garden has been a great addition to our school,
and is looking better each and every day. Thanks to our
faculty and staff that worked on this garden all summer. Thanks
to Nancy Machmer, Scott and Carole Auker, Dawn
Clouser, Jeff Phillips, Seth Yearick, Pat Taylor, Peg & Larry Burke,
Karen Soccio, Deb Coble, and Ann Spicer for all their hard work.
Thanks also go out to the HPAE faculty and staff that donated money
and flowers for this garden. We will always keep Mrs.
Myers in our memories.
Kay was a graduate of Lewistown High School and started her
teaching career as a Physical Education teacher in the Mifflin County School
District in the Mid 60s when she taught at Derry and Burnham Elementary Schools.
Kay began teaching at Highland Park Elementary when the building first
opened in 1989, and continued teaching at Highland Park until her
retirement in 2002. Kay loved children and was well respected by both the
faculty and students. Kay passed away in January, 2005. She will
truly be missed by all of us.
In memory of Mrs. Myers, Highland Park dedicated a special "
memorial garden" in front of the school. Our memorial ceremony on Thursday, May
26th, included kind words by Highland Park Principal Dr. Joe Maginnis, and
past principal Carole Auker. Assistant Superintendent Dr. John Czerniakowski,
who was also a Highland Park principal , attended the memorial ceremony.
This ceremony was witnessed by all students in grades two to five. These
students had Mrs. Myers as a teacher.
A special plaque honoring Mrs Myers has been placed on a park
bench that has been placed in the garden. A Beebalm plant that came from Mrs.
Myers personal garden was planted in the memorial garden, along with a humming
bird feeder, a bird bath, and a Bluebird box, and other special plants.
A special "Redbud" tree, Mrs. Myers favorite, was planted and
each fifth grader put a handful of dirt around the tree in honor of Mrs. Myers.
