Strodes Mills Receives
Outstanding COI Award
On April 10, 2010, Mr.
Styers and Mrs. Weston were invited to attend
the FREEDOM SALUTE CEREMONY for Operation Iraqi
Freedom, Hawkeye Company, 2nd Battalion-112th
Infantry, Stryker Brigade, Pennsylvania National
Guard.
Strodes Mills Elementary
and Middle Schools were awarded the Outstanding
COI (Center of Influence) Award. This award is
given to an individual or organization the unit
felt was most helpful to its soldiers and their
families during mobilization. In recognition of
the schools' efforts of support (numerous letter
writing campaigns, care packages of Hartley's
chips, chewing gum, and pencils and tablets for
the underprivileged school children in Iraq), a
seventeen inch bronze statue of the Concord
Minute Man was presented to Strodes Mills
Elementary and Middle Schools.
Mrs. Weston was also
presented an additional two awards. The Coin of
Excellence, representing a job well done was
presented by SFC David Haubrick and the Medal
for Outstanding Contributions was presented by
Brigadier General Jerry Beck Jr.

PMEA All-State Band Ensembles
Two Mifflin County School
District students have qualified to participate
in PMEA All-State Band Ensembles. Azshelle
Miller from Lewistown Area High School has
qualified for the PMEA All-State Wind Ensemble
and Bryce Hill from Indian Valley High School
has qualified for the PMEA All-State Concert
Band. The PMEA All-State Ensembles perform
at the PMEA All-State Festival Concert which is
being held at the David Lawrence Convention
Center in Pittsburgh on Saturday, April 24th.
Guest Conductors for the ensembles are Ryan T.
Nelson from Northwestern University for the Wind
Ensemble and Stephen Bolstad from James Madison
University for the Concert Band. The
Concert Band performs at 12:00 noon and the Wind
Ensemble performs at 4:00 pm. The PMEA
All-State Festival is held in conjunction with
the PMEA Annual Conference from Wednesday, April
21st through Saturday, April 24th.

The festival is being
hosted by Central Mountain and Sugar Valley High
Schools at Lock Haven University. The Guest
Conductor is Dr. Christopher Heffner, Director
of Bands at Lebannon Valley College of PA.
Dates of the concert are Wed, March 24 through
Sat, March 27. the concert is Sat, March 27
starting at 2pm at the Price Performance Center,
Lock Haven University.
Mifflin County Communities That Care Recently
Awarded $500 in Grant Money to our Three Middle
Schools
Mifflin County
Communities That Care recently awarded $500 in
grant money to each of the three Mifflin County
School District middle schools; Indian Valley,
Lewistown, and Strodes Mills. The funds are
being used by the middle school staffs to
promote and celebrate Red Ribbon Week, which is
scheduled for the last week of October. -
Annually, Red Ribbon Week is used to raise
awareness regarding the need for alcohol,
tobacco and other drug and violence prevention,
early intervention, and treatment services.

Area Administrator Completes National
Institute for School Leadership Program

Robert Reeder, an administrator for Mifflin
County School District, was among 20 school
administrators in the region who completed the
National Institute for School Leadership
professional development program for school
administrators. This program consisted of
25 days of training over three years.
Units of study included: Course I: World-Class
Schooling - Vision & Goals; Course 2: Focusing
on Teaching & Learning; Course 3: Developing
Capacity & Commitment; Course 4: Driving for
Results. This national acclaimed program
focuses on
instructional leadership that centers on
improved instruction and high achievement for
all students. Dave Dolbin,
facilitator, right and Bill Augustine, PA
Inspired Leadership Continuing Education Liaison
from the Pennsylvania Department of Education,
presented the certificate.
