LAHS Math Club Brings
Back Awards from Competition |
| |
The
LAHS Math Club has grown from one official
member in the 2007-08 school year to the
approximate number of 20 in the the current
school year (2008-09). Mary Owens Wheeler
(Mulkey), the club advisor says the group is no
longer "just an activity period club" but has
grown to have bylaws, officers and meets every
second Tuesday evening of each month to practice
for competitions.
October 2009, the Math Club traveled to
George Washington University in Washington, DC.
The team of Lauren Valdivia, Max Wilson, and
Thomas Tuyen made it to the 12th round of 15 in
the math buzzer competition. Another team of Val
Hagans, Levi Miller and April Montgomery made it
to the 9th round.
February
2009 was the Mathematical Association of America
AMC contest at Juniata College. Lauren Valdivia
just missed making the national cutoff score.
March 2009, the team traveled to Shippensburg
University. LAHS was the only school to place in
both the math and programming competition. The
LAHS math buzzer team, comprised of Lauren
Valdivia, Levi Miller, Val Hagans, and Alex
Rhodes, placed third while our programming team
made up of Jon Knepp, Anthony Frock, and Kyle
Birch brought home the second place trophy. This
was the first time the programming team from
LAHS competed. Placing second was quite an
accomplishment.
April
2009 involved no travel time except to the
computer lab to participate in the Purple Comet
Math Competition, which is an international
internet competition put on by the University of
Wisconsin. Members of the LAHS Math Club
participated in the online competition with
students from all over the United States.
Results from that event have not been received
at the time of this posting.
Continued success and growth to the LAHS Math
Club and advisers Mary Wheeler and Joe Lauver.

MCSD Teams Dominate at 2009
PA FPS State Affiliate Bowl |
| |
It was a monumental
day for teams from Indian Valley Middle and
Indian Valley High School in what is being
described as the best outing yet in the ten
years Mifflin County SD has been competing at
the State Affiliate Bowl. To even get to the
State Bowl our teams have to compete in what is
called the Qualifying Competition. The topic for
the Qualifying Competition was on “Space Junk”,
our students did an excellent job of preparing
for the qualifying competition by conducting
research on past information and potentially
future problems that might exist as the amount
of space debris increases.
This year we were able to take four teams to
the Pennsylvania State Affiliate Bowl. The topic
for this competition was on Counterfeit Economy.
To be successful a team must work well together
in completing the six step problem solving
process. The saying “Genius is one percent
inspiration and ninety-nine percent
perspiration” is a precise way to describe the
dedication a team has to have to win in this
competition.
