Congratulations
to Olivia Taylor, an Indian
Valley Cheerleader, on her
recent accomplishment being
named to the Big 33
Cheerleading squad. Olivia is
the first cheerleader in
school history to be named to
the squad. To be invited to
tryout, your coach must
nominated you to the Big 33
organization. For a coach to
consider a cheerleader to be
nominated, the cheerleader
must have basic skills in
dancing, cheering and
tumbling. In tumbling skills,
they must be able to perform
a standing back handspring.
In addition, you must be able
to perform your basic skills
when it comes to stunting.
Since Olivia is usually a
flyer, Olivia had to be able
to perform one legged stunts
on her right leg.
Once Olivia was nominated,
she was invited to a tryout
that was held on February 3,
2008. At the tryout, Olivia
was taught a dance and cheer
that she learned at the
tryout. She then had to
perform the dance and cheer
in front of a panel of judges
as well as show off her
tumbling and stunting skills.
The judges were impressed
with Olivia since she was
able to fly not only on the
required right leg but also
her left leg.
When asked about the
nomination and being named to
the squad, Olivia commented,
"It was a great honor for
Coach Singer to nominate me.
It shows me that she cares
and sees the hard work and
dedication I have put in to
acquire outstanding skills in
the sport of cheerleading. I
was nervous about the tryout
because I knew that I was
going to be the only one from
Indian Valley and that some
of the best across the entire
state would be there."
Olivia will get to attend
several functions as a member
of the Big 33 squad. Her
first function will be a
media day on March 3, in
Hershey. After that she has
many other obligations such
as tailgating with the Eagles
or the Steelers, Big Brother
/ Big Sister functions,
Special Needs Buddy activites,
and much more. The week of
June 7 - 14 will be her
biggest commitment. This is
the week filled with
practice, practice, practice.
Olivia will be cheering then
at the game in Hershey on
June 14.
Olivia will be asking our
local number one fan, Bobby
Fisher, to be her buddy for
the game. Bobby was a buddy
last year to a local
cheerleader who was named to
the squad from Juniata. |
