The Mifflin County
School District (MCSD)
Distance Learning program
is designed to provide
the student with an
alternative way to earn
middle and/or high school
education credits. MCSD
goals are, and the
student’s goals should be
for him/her to complete
satisfactorily all
courses in which he/she
enrolls, to perform at
proficient or higher
levels on the PSSA, and
to graduate from high
school.
Curriculum
For grades 7-12,
middle and high school
web courses networked
through the Brigham Young
University (BYU) Distance
Education program will be
the primary source of
course material. Each
student will be assigned
a MCSD certified teacher
for each course in which
he/she enrolls. This
teacher will serve as an
advisor/resource if the
student is unable to
resolve questions through
the BYU Distance Learning
network or the MCSD
Distance Learning
administrative staff.
Primary contact with each
of these teachers will be
through school email.
Options
Full Time
Students may
enroll in the DL program on a
full time basis. Students
would take a full course load
of required credits for
graduation and/or promotion
to the next grade. Students
would be required to sign in
daily for attendance and
complete all necessary
assignments according to
school district deadlines.
All courses will be managed
through the MCSD Distance
Learning office. Satisfactory
credit completion will be
assigned as a transferred
MCSD DL credit.
Recovery Courses
Students who
are deficient in credits may
enroll in up to two (2) DL
credits in any one school
year. The same
stipulations/restrictions
apply as those identified for
elective courses.
Satisfactory completion will
be assigned as a transferred
MCSD DL credit.
Elective Courses
(updated
4/16/07)
A
traditional school student
who wishes to take a DL
course for enrichment may do
so at his/her expense. A
student in this category must
have a full course load at
his/her assigned school. The
student is responsible for
his/her own computer and
internet access unless the
paper/pencil version is used.
The expectation is that the
student will spend 75 hours
on each .5 credit course
he/she takes. Passing a
proctored final is a
requirement to receive credit
for the course. The cost
for each course is the
responsibility of the
student. All courses will be
managed through the MCSD
Distance Learning office.
Satisfactory credit
completion will be assigned
as a transferred MCSD DL
credit.
Summer School Courses (updated
4/16/07)
Summer
School Courses Students who
fail a course during the
regular school year may take
a .5 credit Distance Learning
(DL) course to replace one
marking period of the failed
course. Eligibility
requirements are the same as

traditional summer school.
Students and your
parent/guardian must meet
with Mr. Hidlay to set up your class(es).
The summer school
program will run from
6/25/07 through 7/24/07.
All course work and
finals must be completed
on or before 7/24/07.
Failure to complete
course work or a final
exam will result in that
grade being converted to
a 0% and being made part
of the final average.
Students will be
graded according to
Mifflin County School
District’s grading scale.
The course work will
count as 80% of the final
grade. The final exam
will count as 20% of the
final grade.
The expectation is
that the student will
spend 1 hour and 40
minutes per day for each
course he/she takes.
The student is
responsible for his/her
own computer and internet
access.
Up to two (2) DL
courses may be taken.
The cost for each
course is the
responsibility of the
student. All courses will
be managed through the
MCSD Distance Learning
office.
Students may take
additional summer school
courses through
traditional summer
school.
If there is a family
vacation planned for the
summer school time line,
Mr. Hidlay must be informed in
writing by the parent
prior to the student
leaving. Students will
still be required to meet
the deadline.
