Elementary School (K-5)

Description: Kindergarten students will experience science through hands-on activities and experimentation that will lead to a foundation for science content throughout the elementary grades. Units focus on the five senses, the farm, seeds and butterflies and integrate language arts and math concepts throughout the year.

Description: First grade students will experience science through hands-on activities and experimentation that will lead to a foundation for science content throughout the elementary grades. Units focus on animals, changes, solids and liquids and integrate language arts and math concepts throughout the year. Students will begin to explore phenomena using basic investigations and will develop a foundation for an understanding of science as inquiry that will be cultivated in later grades.

Students will begin to explore phenomena using basic investigations and will develop a foundation for an understanding of science as inquiry that will be cultivated in later grades.

Standards will be met through an integrated unit on agriculture, including topics on plants, animals, simple machines, ecology and the environment. Students will begin to explore phenomena using basic investigations and will develop a foundation for an understanding of science as inquiry that will be cultivated in later grades.

Students will begin to explore phenomena using basic investigations and will develop a foundation for an understanding of science as inquiry that will be cultivated in later grades.

Description: Fifth grade students will experience science through hands-on activities and experimentation that will lead to a foundation for science content throughout the elementary grades. Units focus on landforms, vertebrate and invertebrate animals, ecology and the environment and integrate language arts and math concepts throughout the year. Students will begin to explore phenomena using basic investigations and will develop a foundation for an understanding of science as inquiry that will be cultivated in later grades.


 

Middle School (6-8)

Description: This course will emphasize scientific inquiry through the content areas of matter, energy, meteorology, astronomy and forces and motion. Students will utilize problem solving, critical thinking, time management and inquiry skills to develop an understanding of science and technology and their influence on society.

Title: Science - Grade 7

Description: The content emphasis of 7th grade science will include laboratory safety, the scientific method and experimental design, cells, heredity, the five kingdoms of living things, agriculture and the earth’s waters. Students will utilize problem solving, critical thinking, time-management and inquiry skills.

Description: This course will emphasize scientific inquiry through the content areas of motion, forces and energy, sound and light and earth sciences. Students will utilize problem solving, critical thinking, time management, lab safety and inquiry skills to develop an understanding of science and technology and their influence on society.


 

High School (9-12)

Title: Science I

Prerequisite: 8th grade Science
Description: Students who have successfully completed Applied Biology or Biology I cannot take this course. Science I is a general science course that focuses on a broad range of topics including: Weather and Climate, Chemistry, Astronomy, Earth Science and Environmental Science. Students explore these topics through laboratory investigations, individual and group project work, classroom discussions and field work.

Prerequisite: Algebra I
Description: The purpose of the Biology I course is to continue the growth and development of students in understanding of and engagement in scientific processes. This will be accomplished through a variety of educational techniques with emphasis on scientific inquiry in the laboratory. Students will continue to learn about and use tools of the scientist to explore life at the level of the cell, tissue, organ and system with emphasis on content areas of the cell, the environment, agriculture, genetics, biotechnology, diversity of life and evolution, microbiology and human body systems. (Biology I students are not eligible to take Applied Biology and students who have taken Applied Biology may not take this course)

Title: Physics I

Prerequisite: Algebra I, Geometry, Biology I or Chemistry I
Description: Physics I is an academic study of mechanics, heat, waves and electricity. The course requires and will enhance proficiency in math and trigonometry, as well as analytical skills sufficient to meet the challenges of problem solving applications associated with the aforementioned forms of energy. Laboratory exercises will be performed to provide a hands-on perspective to the content objectives of this course. Both the technically oriented and college-bound student should consider Physics I as a personal requirement in order to afford maximum opportunity in the academic future and allow him or her to compete at higher levels of academic demand. It is strongly suggested that the student has successfully completed Biology I, Chemistry I and Algebra I before scheduling Physics I.

Title: Chemistry I - Honors

Prerequisite: Biology I and Algebra I Biology I; 'B' average or above in Algebra II OR Algebra II concurrently
Description: This course involves the study of the composition and behavior of matter and the fundamental laws and principles of chemistry. It is designed for college preparatory students, especially those requiring a science background. Chemistry I includes ample laboratory work and use of modern instrumentation. Students who have had difficulty with Algebra and/or Biology I should be strongly discouraged from taking Chemistry I and should instead consider Practical Chemistry.

Description: Applied Biology is designed for the student who is not planning on pursuing a career in the sciences. The intent of this course is to give the student general knowledge of and experiences with the sciences of the cell, the environment, chemistry, genetics, diversity and evolution and body systems. (Students who have successfully completed this course are not eligible to take Biology I or Science I)

Title: Science II

Prerequisite: Biology I or Applied Biology
Description: Students who have successfully completed Chemistry I or Physics I are not eligible to take this course. This course is designed for students who like science and wish to deepen their understanding of it through experiments, problems and investigations. Course content is structured to explain scientific principles related to weather, chemistry, natural resources, biochemistry and physics of motion with an emphasis on measurement and analytical skills.

Title: Practical Chemistry

Grade/s: 11, 12       Length: 36 weeks       Credit: 1.0
Prerequisite: Biology I or Applied Biology
Description: This course involves the study and the composition and behavior of matter and the fundamental laws and principles of chemistry and how they apply to daily life. The course is designed for non-college bound students or those students who will not pursue a career in science or the health professions. It includes ample laboratory work with an emphasis on modern instrumentation.

Title: Physics II - Honors

Grade/s: 11, 12       Length: 36 weeks       Credit: 1.0
Prerequisite: Biology I, Chemistry I, Physics I
Description: Physics II provides the student with a more in-depth look at the principles presented in Physics I. The course emphasizes theoretical aspects of physics more so than practical and is more mathematically-based than Physics I. The experiments will also be at a higher level of understanding. Special topics will be chosen based on student interest and presented with standard material. Reasoning will be stressed more than memory. A good academic math background is recommended.

Title: Earth Science

Prerequisite: Successful completion of at least two lab science credits
Description: Emphasizing mechanisms of change, units of study will include: minerals, rocks and rock cycles; tectonics, mountain building, volcanism and earthquakes; weathering, erosion, hydrology and soil formation; atmospheric properties and phenomena; and an overview of the Earth’s history. Environmental concepts (conservation, resources and problem areas) will be an integral component of most units of study.

Title: Chemistry II - Honors

Grade/s: 11, 12       Length: 36 weeks       Credit: 1.0
Prerequisite: At least a “B” average in Biology I, Chemistry I, Physics I (may be taken concurrently) and Algebra II.
Description: This course involves a detailed study of the laws and fundamentals of chemistry. Topics will include a review of Chemistry I, stoichiometry, gas laws, aqueous solutions, equilibrium, kinetics, thermodynamics, bonding, organic and nuclear chemistry. It also includes very extensive laboratory work which requires in depth analytical thinking and a strong grasp of mathematics.

Title: Biology II - Honors

Course #: 233H

Subject/s: Science
Grade/s: 11, 12       Length: One Year       Credit: 1.0
Prerequisite: Biology I, Chemistry I and Physics I (Physics I may be taken concurrently)
Description: This is a second-level enriched biology course for high academic students only, with emphasis on thinking and reasoning, rather than memorizing. The course is primarily individualized, a self-teaching and self-learning discipline. Laboratory investigation and experimentation are the primary goals of Biology II, with the entire course being competency-oriented.
