Description:
ESL (K – 5) Course Description
Academic instruction is designed specifically for the English language learner to meet the challenges of learning a second language in the four domains of speaking, reading writing and listening. Instruction is modified to meet students’ diverse linguistic and cultural needs. Through the following strategies, students gain equal access to the curriculum and they experience academic success by receiving large amounts of repetition and material that they comprehend.
1. Provide opportunities for purposeful listening and speaking
2. Surround students with print
3. Use rhymes, chants, songs and games
4. Group students by mixed language ability and paired learning
5. Use students prior knowledge
6. Provide a low anxiety environment
7. Use non verbal role playing
8. Incorporate visual aids, realia and manipulatives
9. Use multisensory lessons
10 Provide opportunities to apply vocabulary
11 Write key points and directions on board or chart
As students progress additional strategies will be added:
1. Have students label or categorize
2. Have students use graphic organizers
3. Provide outlines and incorporate shared writing lessons
4. Ask open ended questions so students can describe, restate and expand language
5. Use role-playing and skits
6. Provide a variety of texts, genres and levels for independent reading
7. Fcocus on sustained vocabulary and concept development
8. compare and contrast mathematical concepts as part of vocabulary development

Description:
English as a Second Language (Grades 6-8)
English as a Second Language provides instruction of the English Language in each of the four domains: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. Instruction in American Culture is provided as well. While some instruction will be provided for the student’s social language (which is known as BICS—Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills), major emphasis will be placed on increasing their academic language (known as CALP—Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency). Help will be given with the student’s content area classes as well with the intent of helping them make a successful transition into all mainstream classes. |

Description:
English as a Second Language (Grades 9-12)
English as a Second Language provides intensive instruction of the English language as well as the American culture. Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS) and Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP) will be developed. Students will receive instruction in each of the four language areas: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students are also able to receive additional help with content area classes. Emphasis is placed on assisting students in making successful transitions into the mainstream classroom |
