High School (9-12)

AP Biology

Course #: 13AP

Subject/s: Science, Advanced Placement
Grade/s: 11, 12       Length: 36weeks       Credit: .5 (11), 1.0(12)
Prerequisite: Biology I, Chemistry I, Physics I, and a pre-test administered by the instructor.
Description: This is a second-level enriched biology course for high academic students only with emphasis on thinking and reasoning, rather than memorizing. The primary objective for this course is to prepare students for the advanced placement exam. Through completing this course students will obtain the skills necessary to pass the AP exam and earn college credit in the biological sciences. The course is facilitated at a fast pace and students are expected to prepare in advance of classes and monitor their own progress throughout the course. Depth in any of the major areas of Organic Chemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology, Histology, Anatomy and Physiology of Body Systems, Biotechnologies, Evolution and Ecology may be at the discretion of the teacher with respect to the students’ interests and motivations. Laboratory investigations, experimentation, and class lecture are the primary means of instruction.

AP Calculus AB

Prerequisite: Precalculus and Teacher/Counselor Recommendation
Description: A GRAPHING CALCULATOR IS REQUIRED. This course consists of a full high school year of work comparable to calculus courses in colleges and universities. Topics of study include differential and integral calculus, and discussions and exercises that emphasize a multi-representational approach in which concepts, results, and problems are expressed graphically, numerically, analytically and verbally. Students will be required to take the AP exam and are expected to seek college credit at higher institutions.

AP Chemistry

Course #: 23AP

Grade/s: 11, 12       Length: 36 weeks       Credit: 1.0
Prerequisite: Students must have at least a B average in Biology I, Chemistry I Honors, and Algebra II. Chemistry I students must have an A average. Students must pass an instructor-written pre-test to be considered for AP Chemistry.
Description: This course involves a detailed study of the laws and fundamentals of chemistry. Topics will include a review of Chemistry I Honors and Chemistry II, stoichiometry, gas laws, aqueous solutions, equilibrium, kinetics, thermodynamics, bonding, organic and nuclear chemistry. It also includes very extensive laboratory work which requires in depth analytical thinking and a strong grasp of mathematics.

AP Computer Science A

Prerequisite: Algebra II, Prior/concurrent course in Programming in C++ I is highly recommended Prior/concurrent course in Programming in C++ I is highly recommended.
Description: This course is designed for students desiring advanced computer skills and who are interested in learning more about the programming language Java. Concepts such as data structures, classes, objects, inheritance, abstraction, polymorphism, and code reusability are studied. Hands-on laboratory work helps solidify each concept. Students must possess a strong knowledge of mathematics, logic, and problem solving. The course is designed to prepare students for college computer courses.

AP Economics

Course #: 21AP

Subject/s: Social Studies, Advanced Placement
Grade/s: 11, 12       Length: One Year       Credit: 1.0
Prerequisite: Previous courses in Honors Social Studies and Algebra II
Description: This course aims to provide students with a thorough understanding of the principles of economics that apply to the economic system as a whole (macroeconomics) and the individual decision makers, both producers and consumers, within the larger economic system (microeconomics). The course is the equivalent of the college level introductory course and is also designed to prepare students for the Advanced Placement examinations which are required.

AP English Literature

Grade/s: 11, 12       Length: One Year       Credit: 1.0
Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation plus English 11 Honors or English 10 Honors
Description: The richness and complexity of language are explored in areas such as syntax, imitation, word choice, and tone. Students learn about their own composition style and process, focusing on exploration, planning, writing, editing, rewriting, and polishing text. Students will also engage in intensive work in both critical reading and thematic organization of world literature selections, with emphasis on English language works, both American and British. This is a discussion-based class which emphasizes critical thinking. The College Board Advanced Placement Exam will be required of those who take this course.

AP Integrated Mathematics I

Course #: 9400

Subject/s: Mathematics, Advanced Placement
Grade/s: 09, 10, 11, 12       Length: One year       Credit: 1.0
Prerequisite: Eighth Grade Math
Description: This course bridges previously learned mathematical skills with real-life situations. Students will cover topics such as integers, working with data, solving equations, ratio, proportion and probability through the use of activities, projects and mathematical labs. Successful students will be one step closer to preparation for jobs and careers in today’s world.

AP Physics C: Mechanics

Course #: 03AP

Subject/s: Science, Advanced Placement
Grade/s: 11, 12       Length: One Year       Credit: 1.0
Prerequisite: Biology I, Chemistry I, and Physics I. Prior or concurrent course work in calculus is highly recommended.
Description: The AP Physics C: Mechanics course provides students with a learning experience equivalent to that of a semester-long, calculus-based college course in physics that includes a laboratory component. The course is devoted to Newtonian mechanics. Introductory differential and integral calculus is used throughout the course and on the AP Physics C: Mechanics Exam. The course utilizes guided inquiry and student-centered learning to foster the development of critical thinking skills.

AP U. S. Government and Politics

Course #: 22AP

Subject/s: Social Studies, Advanced Placement
Grade/s: 11, 12       Length: One Year       Credit: 1.0
Prerequisite: Previous Honors Social Studies
Description: This course will provide students with an analytical perspective on government and politics in the United States. The study will include general principles of government and analysis of specific examples to gain an understanding on the American political system. The students will understand the various institutions, groups, beliefs, and ideas that constitute American politics. The course will be taught as a college level course and is designed to prepare the students for the Advanced Placement examination which is required.
