Oceans
and Undersea Life
This thematic unit includes ocean activities to cover everything from bulletin boards and classroom decor,
to student ocean rewards, journal topics, math exercises, ocean poetry,
& more. |
Secrets of
the Ocean Realm
Oceans: the final Earth frontier... From this premise,
students are invited to explore a possible future scenario, where oceans play a major role in Earth ecology
and survival. They will investigate different ocean
habitats and uncover their secrets, answering a quiz
after each segment. |
Label
the World's Oceans
Chances are your elementary students can already point to the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans, but many still
don't recognize the Indian or the Arctic Ocean. Print out this world map and have them practice labeling the
oceans, recognizing direction and a compass rose, locate the equator, and learn how to divide the
hemispheres. |
Tide
Pool Boxes
Shoeboxes (or other similar small boxes) can be painted to form the "tidepool" backdrop, while egg carton
barnacles, clay starfish, and toothpick sea urchins can be fashioned from
these directions and placed in the tidepool projects. |
Ocean
Diarama
Print out these whales and sharks for your students to color and cut out. Then, using a shoebox, your
class can work in groups to create an undersea environment with these diorama instructions. |
All
About Whales
Students will choose a whale and click for more information. Anatomy, size comparisons, whale food chains,
habitats, classification, whale activities, and print-outs are all available at this excellent resource site. |
| Animals of
the Arctic and Antarctic Regions
Savage Seas
Several animations are available at this online learning center, including
the wave machine, satellite viewer, and deep sea simulator. Explore weather
such as ocean cyclones or icebergs; visit the Devil's Triangle, or learn
more about tsunamis and trade winds... Much here to investigate |
Exploring
the Deep Ocean Floor
Giant clams, huge tube worms, and hot springs in the ocean depths... Does it
sound like science fiction? Not at all. Explore mid-oceanic ridges and their
magma ecosystems, along with the amazing life these deep-sea habitats
actually sustain. Then, given the basic ingredients, set your students loose
to create a related science fiction screenplay or short story using these
settings and creatures. |
Ocean
Sciences Teacher Resource Center
If you are planning an ocean unit with your class, then a visit to this site
will surely yield a wealth of diverse resources on marine environments.
Lesson plans are also included; simply find your grade level on the left
side menu bar to navigate the site. |
Splash into an
Aquarium
This is a wonderful and comprehensive online ocean adventure for elementary
students... They will first visit different sites to learn about ocean
animals, and then take a tour of ocean habitats. |
