This lesson was developed as part of Mifflin County’s ongoing technology program.  This lesson is designed for Grade 3.  Its focus is on the areas of life science, language arts, and technology.  Students will have the opportunity to explore the world of spiders and become spider experts.

Students will be able to:

  • identify basic spider characteristics
  • research one type of spider using internet resources
  • write an informative narrative from the spider’s point of view
  • make a triorama showing the spider in its habitat
  • present the story and triorama to the class
Before the activity

1.                   Read “Spiders at Work” by Macmillan/McGraw Hill or other spider related story.  See Resources
2.                 Introduce using the internet as a resource.  Open the Mifflin County School District site and show them how to move           around within the site.  (www.mcsdk12.org)
3.                 Explain what a web quest is.

During the activity

1.       Make sure the students follow the webquest pages as directed.

After the activity

Conclude your spider studies with this no-bake treat.  To make these cookie spiders, you will need one sandwich cookie and four 4-inch strings of licorice per student, white frosting tinted with food coloring, plastic knives for spreading the frosting, and a supply of colorful cake decorating candies.  A student carefully opens the sandwich cookie and centers the licorice strings over the cream filling.  He spreads and thin layer of frosting inside the remaining cookie half and presses it atop the licorice strings.  Next, he spreads a thin layer of frosting on top of the cookie and presses two to eight cake-decorating candies (eyes) into the icing.  Spiderific!  Before the students eat their creations, ask them to explain what is anatomically correct and incorrect about their spiders.
