Introduction: |
You and your
friends are spelunkers who are going to explore some limestone caves. So grab
your hard hats, picks, ropes, and flashlights. You are about to discover a
strange and beautiful underground world.
|

|
The
Task:
|
As you explore,
you will identify at least five cave formations. Also, you will need to
understand and explain how the cave was formed. At the end of your exploration,
you will be hired by the Mineral Museum of Mifflin County to create a display
for the cave section of the museum. To help you, follow the directions on the
guide sheet. We wouldn’t want you to get lost.
|
| The
Process:
|
1.
|
You will be assigned to a fellow spelunker
to work on this project.
|
2.
|
The spelunker facing the left of the cave
(computer) will log on.
|
3.
|
Read the first two paragraphs on this site to find out
how caves are formed. You will
need this information to make a flow chart with at
least 6
steps.
As you explore this site, take notes and draw pictures of each step on the
sloppy copy in your folders. You will be making a flow chart from the
sloppy copy.
|
4.
|
Now it is time to enter the cave. Turn on
your flashlight and watch your step. Have you and your partner tied the
rope to your waist so you do not lose each other? Watch out for bats!!

Read the paragraphs for
Chapters 1, 2, and 3 of
Jenny
and Carlos get out of the Rain. When you get to Chapter four,
stop and click on the picture and read this part of the story. Use the Cave
Formation Worksheet in your folder to look for the formations that are listed
there and described in the story.
|
5.
|
Jenny and Carlos' friend Dave took some
pictures. Look at them and label the same formations in the
Cave Formation Worksheet.
|
6.
|
The tour is almost over so take a last look
around. When you get back to class, you will begin the display for the
Mineral Museum of Mifflin County.
