Creating a Custom Search Engine
One of the biggest concerns of educators in using the
Internet in the classroom is keeping students from
searching inappropriate sites.
Google has a brand new service called Custom Search
Engines. This new technology allows search engines to be
created that focus on a particular subject, or limited
to one or more websites. As an educator, you can create
a search engine that searches only the sites you have
hand-picked, and direct students to use only those
results. For example, you could create a space custom
search engine that used only NASA, Space.com, and The
Nine Planets Solar System Tour. It would look like this.
In addition, the custom search engine can be made
public or unlisted, added to an existing website (ex.
school website), and can be made ad-free for education.
The search engine can also be a collaborative effort,
with other users allowed to contribute sites for
searching. Think of the possibilities for teachers to
collaborate as a grade or department in creating a
search engine for a particular topic, or students to
create their own search engine for a project.
