How Does a Canal lock Work?

Canal lock on the Delaware Canal - Over its course of 60 miles, The Delaware Canal drops 165 feet through some twenty-three locks.  Ten aqueducts carry the waterway over small valleys and streams. Including its towpath and bank, the canal is approximately 60 feet wide and originally was five feet deep.

1. If the lock is empty, the lower gate is shut and the lock filled by opening the bottom part of the top gate.

3. With the bottom part of the top gate shut and the top gate fully closed, the bottom part of the lower gate is opened and the water in the lock is drained until it is water level in the lock is the same as the water level below the lock.

1. If the lock is not empty, the bottom part pf the lower gate is shut and the lock emptied.

3. With the bottom part of the lower gate shut and the lower gate fully closed, the bottom part of the upper gate is opened and the lock is filled until it is water level in the lock is the same as the water level above the lock.
