First Grade News
From Mrs. Rocco and Mrs. Klingensmith
First grade has been a very busy place this year. Now we are getting
ready for second grade. In Language Arts we are working on fluency and
retell skills. Learning long vowel sounds and teams helps to build
vocabulary and improves fluency. Children should be able to read at
least 40 words per minute by the end of first grade.
Since the 100th day of school, we have been practicing numbers to 100.
We use the hundreds chart to practice skip counting by 2’s, 5’s and
10’s. This will help us count pennies, nickels and dimes. Also, all
first graders have addition and subtraction facts to practice every
evening.
As you can see, we have been working very hard. Thanks to all of you
parents who work with your child every evening. It really does make a
big difference!
Buchanan Fifth Grade
From Mrs. Stimely and Mr. Henry
This year is going by quickly, and it’s hard to believe March is upon
us. Our fifth graders will be visiting the middle school soon for
orientation and will be heading to the Outdoor School as their
elementary school days wind down. Now that we have completed the
Writing PSSA, we are focusing all our energies on preparing for the
Reading and Math PSSA. We are looking at sample items and working
through practice through practice problems. We are also reviewing
skills, concepts and strategies covered earlier in the year. We have
discussed the importance of these tests and how we can prepare
ourselves at home:
plenty of sleep, a good breakfast and a positive attitude.
The fifth grade trip to Shaver’s Creek Outdoor School is schedule for
Tuesday, May 13 through Friday, May 16, 2008. Fund raising for this
trip began in fourth grade and continues in fifth grade. The fifth
graders are working hard to raise the necessary funding for this trip
through ham sandwich sales or by donating the remainder of the $105.00
per student that is needed. Please do all that you can, as a parent or
friend, to support our students in reaching their goal.
