Kindergarten– from Mr. Penepacker
The Kindergarteners in Room 101 are busy writing letters and numbers,
as well as matching numbers to groups of objects. In our groups we are
working on beginning and ending sounds, rhyming and rapid letter
naming. The class has been hard at work to improve our skills for the
Mid-Year DIBELS test!
Another theme we started in conjunction with our study of Martin
Luther King, Jr. is a “Kindness” unit. The boys and girls are
collecting soda tabs for the Ronald McDonald House, as well as
striving to reach “100 Acts of Kindness”. When we reach our kindness
goal, the class will participate in a special class cooking activity!
As you can see, Room 101 is working hard to become good students and
kind friends.
Kindergarten– from Miss Nichols
Kindergarten is a very exciting and challenging year for students.
Children come in with different experiences and different levels of
readiness. The first few weeks of kindergarten are spent
learning rules and how to function in a class with many other students
and one teacher. Math, reading and writing skills are introduced.
These skills are practiced in many ways. A lot of kindergarten work is
done using the hands on approach which makes it easier for children to
remember skills. By the middle of the year, the children are making
good progress and preparing for first grade.
We
do a lot of theme learning in kindergarten. Some of our most
popular themes are: The Gingerbread Man, The Polar Express, Holidays,
Penguins, Author Studies and the Ocean. As we approach the 100th day
of school, we will do many activities around that theme.
Kindergarten is your child’s first year in public school as well as
the most unique. Ask them about their day! Don’t be surprised if they
say, “We played all day!” That means they enjoyed their day and
probably learned a lot!
