Mifflin County School District is an independent local school
district, K-12, with 8 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, and 2 high
schools. The Mifflin County School District encompasses 362.3 square
miles which is all of Mifflin County except Wayne Township. The district
has a current enrollment of approximately 5,732
students (Elementary Schools 2,462, Middle Schools 1,329, and High Schools
1,941).
Current expenditures for the year are estimated to be $53 million or
about $9,246 per pupil which is high compared with the rest of the nation.
In our eight elementary schools, in addition to a strong academic
program and a high ranking with the State Department of Education in Technology, we offer
Art Instruction, Music Instruction, and Physical Education Instruction - all with
certified instructors. In addition, opportunities are provided in Enrichment Programs,
Tutorial Program, Field Trips, and Title I services. Other opportunities include
Intramural Sports, parent involvement organizations, Even Start, Head Start, and on-site
lunch service. The Iowa Test of Basic Skills is given in Grades 2 and 4 and our students
have been consistently scoring above the National Average. Pennsylvania State Testing is
given in Grade 5 for Reading and Mathematics and our elementary students are scoring
consistently above the State Average. Of the eight elementary schools, the enrollments vary
from a small school of 139 to a large school of 558.
In our three middle schools, the enrollments vary from
a small school of 203 to the largest of
711 for grades 6-8. The Pennsylvania State Testing
is given in Grade 8 for Math and Reading and the students have been scoring above
the
State Average. All of our middle schools have Computer Labs and are on the Internet and
are ranked high in Technology. In addition to the regular academic program, opportunities
are provided in: Art, Music, Enrichment and Tutorial Programs, Industrial Arts,
Technology, School-to-Work, and Consumer and Homemaking Education. Opportunities also
exist in Interscholastic Athletics, Intramurals, Band, Chorus, parent organizations, and
Business Partnerships.
In our two high schools, 9-12, each with an enrollment
between 871 and 1,070, approximately 60% seek post secondary degree-granting institutions upon
graduation, approximately 6% enter the armed forces and approximately 34% enter the
workforce. The Pennsylvania State Tests are given in grade 11 in Mathematics and Reading
and in grade 9 in Writing. The students have been scoring at the State Average and the
students have been scoring above the National Average in SAT tests.
In addition to the standard curriculum, students are provided the
opportunity for: Extensive Technology opportunities, including the Internet; Honors
Curriculum; Art; Music; Drama; School-to-Work; Enrichment; Distance Learning; Foreign
Language; and career Exploration. Opportunities are also provided in Interscholastic
Sports, numerous clubs, Band, Chorus, parent involvement, community service, and
vocational programs ranging from Agriculture to various trades and industry.
The Mifflin County School District employees a total of 804 people.
481 employees are full time professional staff teachers and administrators. 146 are
full time non-instructional staff employees. Finally, 177 are part time
employees.
The Mifflin County School District physical plant consists of
eight elementary schools, three middle schools, two high schools, one administration building
and two maintenance buildings. The physical plant consists of 853,500 square feet of
building space and encompasses 245.40 acres of land.
The Mifflin County School District transports to and from school
approximately 5,896 students daily of which 5,331 are Mifflin County School District
students and 565 are non-public students. Students are transported by approximately
101 contracted vehicles and one district owned bus and two district owned vans. In
total student transportation vehicles travel 1,331,961 miles per year.
