| Students are
organized into learning groups before arriving at Outdoor School.
Each group has two trained adult leaders. Activities include learning
about: water, soil and nutrient cycles; animals of Pennsylvania
and their adaptations; maps and compasses; the sun as an energy
source and our human history and using land; and other topics
about relationships that exist on our planet. Students also share
information about animal natural history and outdoor safety.
Learning groups are also responsible for daily duties, such as:
- hoppers - preparing tables, serving main dishes,
cleaning tables and giving "Zero Food Waste" report
- fire prep - gathering wood for the evening fire
circle
bathroom cleanup - finding lost clothing and turning it in to
lost and found
- weather skit - kids listen to weather radio and
prepare a skit to inform the other campers of the next day's
weather -
- litter patrol - and other common daily chores
around camp.
The students, staff and teachers eat in the main lodge. Following
meals, short meetings and large group activities are held in the
main lodge before the students head out with their groups. Each
day includes an hour for cabin time or teacher time, depending on
the weather and the schedule. Today included teacher time. The students
enjoyed the option of playing a variety of group games or enjoying
the beautiful autumn weather with friends. |
