5th Grade Outdoor School
Outdoor School and fifth grade
has become a tradition in the Mifflin
County School District. Several
schools attend Outdoor School in the
Fall months, with the rest following
in the Spring.
2004 is the first year Outdoor School
was held at Camp Blue Diamond. Outdoor School replaces the formal classroom setting with hands
on activities and group situations in an outdoor classroom environment.
Students are housed in chaperoned cabins and daily learning activities take place
within assigned learning groups, lead by trained counselors. Classrooms teachers are on-hand at all
times and a full-time nurse is available in case of emergency.
Learning activities are designed to meet 5th grade
content standards, especially in the areas of science, health and social
studies. Outdoor School is currently offered by Shaver's Creek
Environmental Center.

A major part of the funding for Outdoor School is the responsibility of each
child. Often, fundraising helps to
offset the individual out of pocket
costs. The MCSD provides
student/equipment transportation and
$30 per student toward the activity.
